Kitchen Island Questions to Ask
One extremely popular item that home owners constantly request is the kitchen island. Nearly all the new home constructions and kitchen remodels we do incorporate some variation of a kitchen island. And it’s not surprising. Islands are extremely versatile and can be tailored to each home owners’ needs. They come is all shapes, sizes, and styles, and they can have an array of functionality.
But if you’ve ever wanted an island, here are a few questions you’ll want to ask yourself and/or your designer:
- What size island can you legitimately fit into your kitchen?
- Do you want your island to match your existing cabinets and countertops? Or do you want a unique island that stands out from the rest of your kitchen?
- Do you plan to have kids, family, relatives or friends sit around the island? If so, how many people should the island seat? I don’t know about you, but I have four kids, and if our island only seated 3, one kid would be ticked 🙂
- Do you need extra storage / cutting board / trash bins / etc housed in your island?
- Do you need appliances built it? What about a wine fridge or other?
- Do you plan to cook on it? Do you need a sink?
- Should it be stationary or portable?
- What’s your budget?
Design Tip
Kitchen islands are a great opportunity to add some extra pizzaz and excitement to your kitchen. Don’t feel obligated to be matchy-matchy with the rest of your kitchen. Contrasting materials from your cabinets and counters can look great and set your island and kitchen apart. So feel free to experiment with the design and consider less traditional materials. Butcher block, concrete, glass, and other counter materials make for great conversation pieces. Below are some examples of recent islands we’ve built, but if you’re ever looking for tons of inspiration, just go to Pinterest and search for custom kitchen cabinets islands.
